What is it about?
Using Latin to translate erotic descriptions has been a common practice in English translations of foreign works. This paper examines, on the basis of extensive archival research, the way Latin was employed in a 1939 English version of the 16th century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei (aka The Golden Lotus).

Why is it important?
The use of Latin in English translations of foreign works is an established practice, however, how was Latin incorporated in the English translations remains unexplored, because this would rely upon the availability and accessibility of archival materials, which have not traditionally been deemed of primary importance in translation studies. This paper analyses the publishing mechanism of the use of Latin in laboratory details on the basis of archival materials.
