What is it about?

This study investigates the risks of wheat allergy in pre-packaged foods sold in China by assessing the accuracy of allergen labeling on 575 products and conducting quantitative food allergen risk assessment. It highlights the crucial role of clear labeling in helping individuals with wheat allergies avoid adverse reactions, noting that many products do not accurately indicate the presence of wheat. By applying the VITAL 3.0 program, we found substantial discrepancies in allergen labeling and identified a potential risk to consumers due to improper declarations. The study underscores the need for stricter regulations and better practices in allergen labeling to enhance food safety and protect people with allergies, calling for further research to improve understanding of allergen management in the food industry.
