What is it about?
This study examines how emojis contribute to humor in casual WhatsApp chats. The findings show that emojis help mark when a joke starts and ends, as well as respond to humor—often mimicking laughter. The most frequently used emojis for this purpose are the classic yellow smiling and laughing faces, though other, less common emojis can also be used in playful and creative ways.
