What is it about?
In eighteenth-century London sleeping-in was associated with a rakish, dissolute life-style. Custom, health-advice and proverbial wisdom all advised early bed-times and early rising. A new genre of self-help literature for those hoping to better themselves added to this by emphasising the financial advantages of being disciplined when it came to sleeping habits. But how could people rise in the world when a cavalier disregard for this kind of advice was a sign of high social standing?
