What is it about?

As part of the EPIC Lift Capacity (ELC) Certification program, 912 formally trained and certified evaluators contributed 4,443 complete test-retest data sets. To date, this is the most extensive study of its type and the only one that used the test-retest model to ensure the data can be considered safe and dependable.

Why is it important?

Lift capacity is a basic human ability that varies across age and, to a lesser degree, across genders. Normative data based on age and gender are a key part of the decision-making process to identify persons who are likely to be safe and dependable in physically demanding jobs. As the workforce ages, becomes gender-balanced, and experiences increased body mass per worker, these factors must be included in models that are used to design safe jobs.

Perspectives

I hope the data from this research study can help develop fair employment standards and practices to provide gender equity access to physically demanding jobs such as infantry combat, firefighters, and protective service officers.
