What is it about?

Mixing of fuel and air has always been an area of concern for scramjets and high-speed/hypersonic propulsion systems. One of the major technical issues has been the limited time and space available for mixing and efficient combustion in the combustor. A novel device called the High Frequency Actuator is used to force jets in a supersonic crossflow. This has shown to improve mixing and penetration of fuel in combustors.

Why is it important?

Averaged side view images show considerable movement of separation shock for forced case, upstream due to pulsation and presence of recirculation zone as compared to baseline. Averaged end view images showed larger areas of interaction for forced cases over near field slices in the cross-stream direction. Instantaneous side view images showed presence of large vortical structures which evolve over time due to strong pulses being generated from the HFA. This study indicates that pulsation of jets in cross flow has a significant benefit over steady injection.
