What is it about?
Shock wave formation can be damaging during the operation of supersonic nozzles. This paper presents an analytical model to predict the formation of shocks in converging-diverging nozzles and the resulting modifications to more closely match experiment.

Why is it important?
Predicting shock waves and the resulting separation in nozzles is important in predicting the forces experienced by the nozzle. If the forces are unbalanced enough, vehicle performance can be reduced or damage can occur to the nozzle. Analytical models allow for quicker calculation of the shock location and pressure compared to numerical simulations.
