What is it about?
Vertical axis wind turbines are highly beneficial for renewable energy applications, especially in urban areas. There is a need to increase the performance of these vehicles. In this context, simulations were performed using virtual roughness elements on the turbine blades. This application provided a significant increase in the power coefficient of the turbine.

Why is it important?
The ratio of the roughness element size applied on the vertical axis turbine blade to the blade chord was important. As a result of the analysis, the optimum roughness element region was selected. In addition, roughness element cases with different heights were also tested.
