What is it about?

This is a paper analysing new developments and experimentation in South Korean diplomatic practice. With the technological environment in flux, where is K-diplomacy going and how, paradoxically, do the domestic challenges for Korean diplomacy offer an unusual window for diplomatic innovation? This paper's examination of Korean diplomacy is very different from other accounts dominated by two familiar themes in Korean foreign relations: the North Korea issue and South Korea as a middle power.

Why is it important?

Debate about not just foreign policy objectives but also the processes of diplomacy that help shape South Korea's foreign relations is important. Western countries can learn from watching closely how like-minded powers outside the West go about the conduct of their foreign relations.

Perspectives

I have co-authored this policy brief during a one-month stay as visiting scholar at the Korean Institute for International Economic Policy. This gave us the opportunity to do extensive interviewing in Seoul and Sejong City.
