What is it about?
Many of the treatments given to patients with kidney disease are not based on high quality evidence from clinical trials, and more and better trials to determine the most effective and safe treatments are urgently needed. In this article on designing clinical trials, we discuss how a 'learning health system', which continuously measures, reports on and monitors treatments of patients with kidney disease, can be used to facilitate clinical trials that lead to better outcomes. We use the example of a recently completed randomized clinical trial that was conducted using a nephrology clinical quality registry to illustrate the potential of this approach to improve outcomes for patients with kidney disease.
