What is it about?
This paper discusses the impact of superheavy trucks on flexible pavements. Because these trucks are extremely heavy and have an unusual axle configuration, it can be challenging to predict stress-strain states in the pavement using linear elastic structural models. The paper describes a study that measured real full-scale strains in an asphalt layer under the weight of superheavy trucks under different conditions. The results show how the pavement responds to these trucks and provide information on the transverse anisotropy response of the pavement.

Why is it important?
The analysis of the effect of superheavy trucks on flexible pavements is important for ensuring the safety and durability of the road network. Superheavy trucks can cause significant damage to the pavement, which can lead to higher maintenance costs and reduced service life of the road. Understanding the mechanical response of the pavement to these loads is crucial for developing effective pavement design and maintenance strategies.
