What is it about?
Disintegration behaviors have important influences on the strength of clay-bearing rocks, while samples having disintegrated in previous disintegrating-durability tests, are destroyed in the shape and cannot be applied to performing strength test. Therefore, we put forward a new methodology, in which the sample shape is fixed with a cutting ring and the disintegrating samples are seen as certain soil. By this means, the strength value of the disintegrating clay-bearing rock could be determined by direct shear strength test. The study results are excellently demonstrated by the development of many characteristic parameters, such as the fissure area ratio, the fragment size distribution characteristics, and strength parameter of clay-bearing rock, in the number of wetting-drying cycles. Therefore, we conclude that the wetting-drying cycle is the external weathering cause, and the disintegration behavior closely related to rock strength is the internal mechanism cause.
