What is it about?

The diversity of Bangladeshi rice with respect to their ability to tolerate salinity. We also explain about the utility of derived trait values for the prediction of the ability of Bangladeshi rice to fare well under stress.

Why is it important?

The information that we provide about Bangladeshi rice is important for selection of donors for salinity tolerance traits. This is important as many coastal areas are becoming increasingly saline due to sea level rise as a consequence of climate change

Perspectives

This paper stemmed from bioinformatics project on the 3000 rice genomes given to 4th year undergraduate students who had time on their hands due to the Covid lockdown. One of these students, the first author, Nafis ul Alam, who is extremely good in computational work persevered. Which led me to share with him our data on screening of Bangladeshi rice genotypes for salinity tolerance traits. His work was so impressive. While still an undergraduate he eventually was successful in getting a PhD fellowship at the University of Arizona with a famous professor, Dr. Rod Wing. In the end we have documented useful traits for Bangladeshi rice which will be crucially important in breeding for salt tolerant rice for Bangladesh.
