What is it about?
Little is known about the incidence of leptospirosis in Vanuatu, mostly because of a lack of available diagnostic tests. In this work, we show that a high number of outpatients visiting Port Vila Central Hospital actually have leptospirosis. In addition, a high proportion of patients have antibodies against Leptospira, showing previous exposure. Our results advocate for more attention being paid to leptospirosis and highlight the need for improved laboratory diagnosis of this potentially severe disease.
