What is it about?
Hip fractures in elderly patients are associated with high mortality rates. Predicting patient outcomes is crucial for timely medical intervention. The HALP score, a simple biomarker combining hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet levels, may help in assessing the risk of mortality. This study evaluates the prognostic utility of the HALP score in predicting 30-day and 1-year mortality in elderly patients with proximal femur fractures (PFFs).

Why is it important?
We analyzed 435 elderly patients who underwent surgery for hip fractures and found that lower HALP scores were strongly associated with higher 1-year mortality, outperforming other common blood markers in predicting survival. As a simple, cost-effective, and easily accessible biomarker, the HALP score can be derived from routine blood tests, offering a quick and practical alternative to traditional risk models. Its use in clinical practice enables early identification of high-risk patients, allowing timely interventions, personalized treatment plans, optimized rehabilitation, and closer monitoring, ultimately improving patient survival.
Perspectives

I hope this study highlights the importance of simple yet powerful biomarkers in improving patient outcomes in emergency and surgical settings. Predicting mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures is not just a clinical challenge—it has real-world implications for patient care, resource allocation, and decision-making in hospitals worldwide. The HALP score is an easily accessible tool, and if this research encourages further discussion or inspires clinicians to consider new ways to enhance risk assessment, then it has achieved its purpose. More than anything, I hope this study sparks interest in integrating practical, data-driven approaches into everyday medical practice to improve patient survival and quality of care.
