What is it about?

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on new mothers in Argentina, affecting their mental health. This study looked at how postpartum depression, insomnia (sleep problems), and stress changed over three waves of the pandemic. The results showed that postpartum depression and insomnia increased significantly, while pandemic-related stress gradually decreased. Certain factors made mental health worse, including being unemployed, having little medical support, living in smaller households, working remotely, being older, having multiple children, and living in less developed regions. Even though women seemed to adapt to the stress of the pandemic over time, their overall mental health continued to decline.

Why is it important?

The study suggests that healthcare systems should focus on supporting new mothers, especially those facing economic and social challenges, to protect their mental well-being during and after crises like the pandemic.

The findings of our study shed light on the mental health challenges faced by postpartum women during the COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina. Rising rates of depression and insomnia reflect deeper inequities within societies and health systems, which often overemphasize physical recovery while neglecting mental well-being. Traditional gender roles, which place the burden of care-giving primarily on women, can exacerbate these struggles. Factors such as unemployment, poverty, lack of medical support, and the reinforcement of these gender expectations further worsen the situation. This highlights the need for a more inclusive and equitable approach to maternal health that challenges these roles and prioritizes both mental and physical well-being. To build healthier societies, we must address these inequities and ensure that all women receive the support they need, especially during such a vulnerable phase of life. Above all, we hope this article sparks reflection and discussion.
