What is it about?
This study introduces the ASK-G (Awareness, Skills, Knowledge-General) scale, a new tool designed to measure cultural competence in the general population. Using a rigorous development process, the scale evaluates individuals’ self-awareness, knowledge of diverse cultures, and proactive skills in interacting with culturally diverse others. The scale fills a critical gap in assessing cultural competence beyond professional settings and provides insights into how people engage with diversity.

Why is it important?
Cultural competence is vital for fostering understanding and equity in increasingly diverse societies. Existing tools focus on professionals, leaving a need for measures applicable to the general population. The ASK-G scale stands out for its comprehensive, evidence-based approach and applicability to diverse contexts, making it a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and policymakers aiming to improve cultural awareness and skills. In light of heightened awareness around systemic racism and diversity, this work addresses a pressing need to measure cultural competence broadly. This tool provides a pathway to understanding and improving how people connect across cultures.
