What is it about?

The Medici consorts were instrumental in the arrival into and support of the Jesuits in Florence and other cities in the Grand Duchy; without the support of these women, the Society of Jesus would likely not have established colleges there, and if they did, they might easily have failed to thrive.

Why is it important?

The connection between women patrons and the Jesuits is well established, but it has not been studied extensively in Tuscany or as a continuum between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; this article seeks to redress that.
