What is it about?

This publication looks into how Sci-Hub, a platform that is used to circumvent academic paywalls, is used. Specifically it compares which academic journals/publishers and publications are listed in the database of Sci-Hub and compares this complete set of data that they have to the data that is requested by Sci-Hub's users.

Why is it important?

So far, studies have only looked into either what data is present in Sci-Hub or which data is being downloaded through it. This is the first publication that compares these two things, to uncover the reading preferences of the Sci-Hub users.
