What is it about?
Human and industrial activities release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When cities remove as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they release, they are called zero-carbon cities. The country of Abu Dhabi is building a zero-carbon city called Masdar City. Part of their plans include giving people a fixed allowance of energy units called ‘ergos’. People will be able to spend their ‘ergos’ on energy-consuming activities, from having a shower to charging a laptop.

Why is it important?
The idea of an energy allowance was meant to help reduce energy usage and tackle climate change. However, some people argued against it. They said that it raised ethical questions about individual and societal freedom. The ergos experiment shows the different ways in which people can resist new ideas about climate change and energy usage. KEY TAKEAWAY: Any attempt to restrict people’s energy usage could be considered as a breach of their individual freedom. We need to be aware of this when planning and persuading people to adopt new ideas.

We can all do something. We can all do more.
The climate crisis is serious and some changes are inevitable. But there are still things we can do to make it better. Don’t be lazy and assume there is nothing you can do. Have the courage to make an effort.

Can one person really make enough of a difference?
For people to continue making individual efforts to tackle climate change, we need to be able to remain optimistic that our efforts will make a difference. We need to see not only that our behavior is good in itself, but that it will have a good outcome.
Simple steps each of us can take to live more sustainably.
Each of us can make a contribution, but many of us need guidance – and persuasion. We need to know that our small sacrifices are worthwhile. And we need inspiration and ideas for each change we could make. These practical steps are a good starting point for how those in developed economies can reduce their impact on the environment.
