What is it about?
Based on on site dynamic measurements, the basic parameters governing seismic response of the leaning tower have been identified, taking into account soil structure interaction (SSI). It is noted that SSI , the greatest ever measured on civil structures, has a fundamental role on seismic response and determined significantly to tower survival in good shape for more than seven centuries. The parameters for the foundation impedence terms have been calibrated in vertical direction too.

Perspectives

The deep soil effect had never been measured in Pisa. It was the first time that measure of the soil down to 100 meters had been taken. Future work will include even deeper measurement and a more accurate evaluation of the structural response of the tower. The composition of the research team where different expertises took place, permitted to investigate different aspects never considered before.
