What is it about?
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic compounds that persist in the environment. We have isolated Sphingomonas koreensis from oil-contaminated sludge. This bacterial strain exhibited a great capability to degrade PAHs within 15 days. We could detect the PAHs catabolic genes as well as determine the activities of some degradative enzymes which are responsible for degradation of these compounds.

Why is it important?
My isolated bacteria could completely remove low molecular weight PAHs within 15 days when these compounds were separately used as a sole source of carbon and energy. In addition to, it could remove 98% of carcinogenic pyrene within the same period of time. So, this strain is highly recommended for application in the field of bioremediation.
