What is it about?

This study investigates how changes in emotion regulation serve as a bridge between mindfulness and symptom reduction. By tracking 162 patients across 25 therapy sessions, the study reveals that mindfulness reduces depressive symptoms by decreasing rumination and increasing strategies like acceptance and reappraisal. For anxiety, mindfulness works by reducing avoidance. Surprisingly, adding brief mindfulness exercises at the start of CBT sessions did not significantly enhance these effects, suggesting that the core therapeutic processes of CBT already benefit from the emotion-regulation aspects of mindfulness.

Why is it important?

Depression and anxiety disorders affect millions worldwide, making it crucial to refine treatments and understand how they work. This study sheds light on the "how" of mindfulness in therapy, showing that its power lies in helping people regulate their emotions more effectively. By identifying distinct pathways for reducing depression (focusing on acceptance and reducing rumination) and anxiety (reducing avoidance), the research offers insights that can guide personalized treatment approaches.
