What is it about?

This article reports an analysis of two similar games that however have two very different approaches to narrative organization. The two games are Halo 3 and Halo 3 ODST. The former has a linear and simple story, while the latter feature a much more complex one. By analyzing online reviews of the two games, I show how different narrative organizations provoked different responses of their audiences.

Why is it important?

The article presents an initial understanding of how the complexity of stories can be used to create more interesting and appreciated games. It also shows how we can detect narrative complexity and possibly how to predict audience responses to it.

Perspectives

This article is one of the first applications of the concept of narrative complexity in video games, and one of the first attempts to analyse how it works and what it actually means. Ultimately, I hope the work started in this article will lead to a framework to create more interesting and engaging stories. A better understanding of narrative complexity can be also useful to use video games to address complexity as a societal challenge.
