What is it about?

This study has compared the diagnostic performance of the two targets currently used to amplify Treponema pallidum by PCR: 47kDa protein membrane versus polymerase I gene. We demonstrated that the two targets provide similar accuracy and could be univocally used in routine.

Why is it important?

This is the first study providing a comparison of the diagnostic performance of the two PCRs used in the diagnosis of syphilis on the same samples. This comparison was done on paired samples from a large collection of swabs (n=272). The findings of this study showed the two targets provide the same diagnostic performance and have an almost perfect agreements.
