What is it about?
In this paper, we discuss why step count targets don't yet feature in global Physical Activity Guidelines. We also talk about how we can move towards the inclusion of step-based Physical Activity Guidelines in the future and ways to utilise data from smartphones and wearables for physical activity surveillance.

Why is it important?
People use smartphones and wearables to count steps every day. And for good reason - step count is simple to monitor and easy to understand. But how many steps per day keep the doctor away? Physical Activity Guidelines tell us how much physical activity to do for optimal health benefits. But they do not yet tell us how many steps per day are enough.
