What is it about?

The main purpose of this work was to elucidate the relationship between the very common snail L. stagnalis and freshwater populations of U. flexuosa Wulfen. The aims of this study were (i) to estimate the abundance of snails on thalli of U. flexuosa in a natural habitat, and (ii) to compare the degree to which L. stagnalis consumes Elodea canadensis Michx. (Canadian waterweed) and U. flexuosa and to estimate the feeding preference of L. stagnalis.

Why is it important?

The research concerning the range of utilization of Ulva taxa by freshwater snails is very important in the context of research on the influence of competitive interactions between plants and herbivores, mainly with regard to important changes in the structure and dynamics of macrophyte communities

Perspectives

The existence of herbivores that are able to consume Ulva and restrict its expansion may have practical applications, and should be further examined.
