What is it about?

Ivan Boszormenyi Nagy introduced a family therapy approach which does not focus on what goes wrong in relationships, but on what goes well, on mutual care. This approach assumes that connectedness between people promotes trust and health. The authors of this article have observed Nagy's therapeutic actions, and described how he applies the principles of contextual theory in therapy. Six clusters of interventions have been described which apply relational ethical ethics as the basis of this approach.

Why is it important?

Though contextual therapy was received well, its application is rather difficult, due to the fact that Nagy gave limited information about how his theory should be applied in practice. This also hinders research on the efficacy of the contextual therapy. This article provides concrete interventions that may instruct therapists in conducting therapy and is a first step towards efficacy-research.

Perspectives

The contextual theory comes to life in the way its founder puts it into practice. Nagy's publications are valuable, but the analysis of his therapy practice gives us context in the story, concretizes the theory and provides useful tools and guidelines.
