What is it about?
This introduction to this Special Issue of the EJE explores the evolution of secondary vocational education in the Western Balkans following the collapse of communism, the impact of the EU accession process highlighting the critical link between social exclusion and education at different stages of the schooling cycle.

Why is it important?
There are high levels of social exclusion in the countries of the Western Balkans and schools play a critical role in alleviating or exacerbating the threat of social exclusion. Carefully designed and targeted policy interventions at different stages of the schooling process can lead to a lessening of social deprivation and exclusion across the region.
