What is it about?

Patients with asthma-COPD overlap could be identified from asthma and COPD by the expression profiles of five miRNAs in plasma, especially miR-15b-5p. The combined assessment of miR-15b-5p, periostin, and YKL-40 was valuable for characterizing ACO.

Why is it important?

Plasma levels of miR-15b-5p can serve as a potential biomarker for identifying patients with asthma-COPD overlap (ACO), while also furthering our understanding of the pathophysiology of ACO.

Perspectives

It is considered that elucidation of the role of miR-15b-5p in the pathophysiology of ACO will contribute to the development of precision medicine for ACO, asthma, and COPD.
