What is it about?
This an analysis of the drawings of the African American self-taught artist, Joseph E. Yoakum (1891-1972). It is based around a review of the book, 'Joseph E. Yoakum: What I Saw' (2021), edited by Mark Pascale, Esther Adler and Edouard Kopp. Yoakum came to art-making late in life, after a long working life that included time with the circus and extensive travelling in the USA and internationally.

Why is it important?
The article and the book under review seek to revise received ideas about Yoakum as an artist that place his work in marginal narratives and to reposition him in more central social and art historical contexts.
