What is it about?
This study examines the psychometric properties of the Caregiver Strain Questionnaire (CGSQ) in a sample of 598 Latinx caregivers in the United States. Caregiver strain refers to the stress experienced by parents caring for children with emotional or behavioral challenges. The research confirms the three-factor structure of the CGSQ (objective, subjective internalized, and subjective externalized strain) and adapts it to better suit Latinx caregivers by addressing cultural nuances and removing one poorly performing item. The study also demonstrates how caregiver strain is linked to youth mental health issues and the use of support services like counseling and telepsychology.

Why is it important?
Latinx families often face disparities in accessing mental health services, influenced by cultural perceptions and systemic barriers. This study validates a key tool for measuring caregiver strain within this population, making it more culturally relevant and reliable. By providing insights into how caregiver stress impacts help-seeking behaviors, this research lays the groundwork for improving mental health support and reducing disparities for Latinx families.

This study reflects the need to validate tools that accurately capture the experiences of Latinx caregivers, who often face unique challenges in supporting their children’s mental health.
