What is it about?

Interactions of molecules are governed by physical laws. These laws of thermodynamics describe what interactions happen spontaneously and what changes in the structure and energy of the interacting molecules accompany the events. In this article I attempt to visualize antibody interactions with antigens in a virtual landscape of molecular energy and structure and show that this landscape corresponds to the antibody interaction network I proposed in a recent paper.

Why is it important?

A visualization that attempts to grab the functioning of the humoral immune system as a whole and the placement of antibody interactions in a virtual physical space opens new perspectives in interpreting immune function. In this paper we introduce a novel presentation of complex molecular systems and show how an immune response can be displayed in this format.

Perspectives

This theoretical paper extends and confirms our earlier model (Generalized Quantitative Model) of antibody homeostasis by showing that antibody interactions form a network and that this network is in a structure-energy space. Here we also show how a thymus independent response - representing natural antibody generation - differs from a thymus dependent response in this space. This approach can lead to a thermodynamic systems description of the immune function on the long term.
