What is it about?
This study looked at how people with hearing loss, their families, and hearing care professionals feel about the stigma of hearing loss and using hearing aids. Some people with hearing loss feel embarrassed about it because of the negative ideas that others have about aging or disability. Family members didn’t feel much stigma themselves but understood that hearing loss can be a source of shame. Healthcare professionals, on the other hand, thought that the stigma about hearing aids was more important than the stigma around hearing loss.

Why is it important?
This study highlights the social challenges that adults with hearing loss face, especially when it comes to how others view them. The stigma related to hearing loss can impact a person’s identity and how they feel about themselves. By understanding this stigma, healthcare professionals and families can better support people with hearing loss. It also helps to address the negative stereotypes that link hearing loss to aging and disability, leading to better care and less embarrassment.
