What is it about?
Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are promising next-generation electrochemical storage devices for renewables, which are indispensable to achieve carbon neutrality. In this Perspecive, we show the recent progress of aqueous RFBs using iron-based catholytes, which are costless, echo-friendly, and nontoxicity.

Why is it important?
This paper summarizes solubility, redox potential, and stability for iron-based catholytes, and introduces the design strategy of iron-based catholytes for advanced aqueous RFBs. In addition, we demonstrated a method to evaluate easily the redox potential of iron-based catholytes using density functional theory calculations for ligand molecules rather than corresponding coordination compounds.
