What is it about?
My latest paper in Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science. The paper describes complex dynamics in an old model of mine (from 1979) that has never been studied in detail before. The model was constructed in an attempt to describe and reproduce experimental observations of chaos and bursting oscillations in the peroxidase-oxidase reaction, a simple one-enzyme catalyzed reaction with only two substrates. This experimental reaction system shows a richness in complex dynamic behaviors unprecedented in biochemistry, including mixed-mode oscilations, quasiperiodicity and chaos. Contrary to expectation the simple model studied here is as rich in nonlinear dynamic behaviors as its experimental counterpart.

Why is it important?
Chaos is ubiquitous in biological systems and we lack an understanding of the implications that chaotic dynamics may ave to an organism or an ecosystem. In some cases chaos may be beneficial and in others it may be harmful and therefore needs to be controlled. Therefore it is essential to have simple model systems such as the peroxidase-oxidase reaction system, which can be studied both in the laboratory and as model systems.
