What is it about?

The performance of solar cells made from organic molecules can be enhanced by the insertion of layers between the indium-tin oxide (ITO) transparent conducting electrode and the organic material. By carefully characterizing each layer sequentially the reasons behind the increase in performance can be made clear.

Why is it important?

In our work we determine the vanadium oxide layers to be highly n-type, in contrast to the assumed (and previously reported) p-type behaviour, with a large work function and a very low lying valence band. We propose the likely mechanism of hole-extraction from the SubPc molecule is through 'gap states' since there is a large barrier to extraction through the metal oxide valence band,
