What is it about?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a key intervention for management of misophonia, hyperacusis and tinnitus. The aim of this study was to perform a preliminary analysis comparing the scores for self-report questionnaires before and after audiologist-delivered CBT via video calls for adults with misophonia, hyperacusis or tinnitus or a combination of these. This preliminary analysis suggests that CBT via video calls may be effective in reducing the impact of misophonia, hyperacusis and tinnitus.

Why is it important?

This is the first paper that reports the effectiveness of audiologist-delivered CBT for misophonia, hyperacusis and tinnitus delivered via video calls.

Perspectives

This study suggests that although CBT can help patients with tinnitus, hyperacusis and misophonia for some patients ongoing psychological support may be needed after they finish CBT.
