What is it about?
This work applies the sequential ensemble Kalman filter-based calibration and data assimilation (C/DA) technique to the empirical thermosphere model NRLMSISE-00 using accelerometer-derived neutral mass density from the GRACE mission. To introduce the impact of the thermosphere on estimating ionospheric parameters, the physics-based TIE-GCM is run with the updated compositions (O2, O, and He) and neutral temperature estimates from the C/DA-NRLMSISE-00. Results are validated against independent measurements (TEC, Swarm).

Why is it important?
This study is an excellent example of using in-situ accelerometer-derived neutral mass density to improve a physics-based model on a global scale (not just along the orbit).
