Competence and Warmth Scales--Portuguese Version

What is it about?

The Competence and Warmth Scales – Portuguese Version (de Paula Couto & Koller, 2012) measure how adults perceive and stereotype older adults in terms of warmth and competence. This version is the Portuguese translation of the original scales created by Fiske and colleagues (2002). The translation process involved first translating the items into Portuguese and then discussing them with two independent experts to ensure the meaning and concepts remained accurate. Since this was a new translation, the researchers conducted a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Oblimin rotation on the 12 items to check the scale's structure. A Monte Carlo Parallel Analysis (PA) indicated that the best solution was a two-component structure. Each item clearly aligned with its expected category, confirming the scale’s structure. The two components explained 45.7% of the variance, and the reliability was solid: Cronbach’s alpha was .76 for Competence and .74 for Warmth.
