What is it about?

This articles demonstrates how confidence in quality can be embedded in mixed method research by carrying forward a conceptual or theoretical framework across a series of visual displays. This includes joint displays that document the link between the theoretical perspective and design elements and those that trace its link to findings.

Why is it important?

Most of the methodological literature about mixed methods is framed by a design orientation where the choice of a one of the basic set of designs is equated with quality. This article shifts attention to a different orientation that can have broader appeal in disciplines like psychology where a theoretical framework is instrumental to judgments about quality.

Perspectives

Many qualitative researchers are uneasy about the potential for a conceptual or theoretical model or framework to impose a deductive, hypotheses-testing mindset and to reinforce a confirmatory bias. The examples incorporated in this article demonstrate that mixed method researchers are capable of juggling an exploratory and confirmatory mindset and can generate new insight even when emptying a pre-existing framework.
