What is it about?

The purpose of this paper is to identify how spirituality assisted individuals as they were experiencing difficult situations or crises in their lives. Common themes among participants highlighted the importance of developing an image of God that was safe, having experiences with God that were intimate and authentic, and developing existential beliefs that allowed for hope and restoration in the live of our participants.

Why is it important?

The vast majority of individuals believe in a non-material, metaphysical world where there is an existence of a higher power. Studying how these beliefs are protective and an effective means for change could be helpful when helping people that are suffering.

Perspectives

Unveiling specific aspects of Christianity and how these beliefs were protective factors for individuals with mental health was personally eye-opening. Seeing the relationship between "what" people believe with regards to existential/religious views, and "how" this impacted their emotional and physical well-being was an unexpected surprise. It made me begin pondering more about the relationship between the content of an individual's belief and that person's holistic, overall well-being.
