What is it about?
This study explores the hopes of 990 parents of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth in the U.S. Using a radical hope framework, the research analyzes parents' responses to an open-ended question about their greatest hopes for their children. The study identifies four themes: living authentically, forming interpersonal connections, meeting life milestones, and being accepted by society. These themes highlight the emotional and cognitive processes parents undergo while navigating a society that often marginalizes TGD individuals.

Why is it important?
Amid increasing societal and legislative challenges for TGD youth and their families, this research emphasizes the resilience and optimism of parents. The findings provide a pathway to better understanding how parents support their children despite systemic discrimination. Clinicians, educators, and policymakers can use these insights to create more supportive environments for TGD youth and their families, fostering acceptance and reducing health disparities.
