What is it about?

This study analyzed data from a trial of Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) - a group treatment intended to reduce criminal recidivism. Compared to the usual addiction and mental health care that Veterans received, those who had been recently incarcerated had lower recidivism risk if they received MRT.

Why is it important?

MRT has been used in correctional settings for decades but has never been tested in a randomized controlled trial. This study was the first to demonstrate that MRT may be effective for breaking the cycle of criminal activity for some veterans.

Perspectives

Any potential that MRT has for keeping individuals out of jail should be balanced with the costs of implementing this intensive intervention.
