What is it about?

This study is about teacher stress and school leadership. Results demonstrated wide variability in teacher risk for occupational stress between the schools within one large school system. This variability was in part explained by the quality and stability of school leadership. Data mapping was used to identify stress hotspots within the district as a strategy to engage district leadership in conversations about working conditions.

Why is it important?

Effective school leadership is associated with lower teacher stress. Findings from this study demonstrate that the quality and stability of school leadership play an important role in the incidence of teacher stress vulnerability. This study suggested important pathways for school psychologists seeking to promote the occupational health of teachers.

Perspectives

We used a variety of research methods including key informant interviews, panel discussions, multi-level modeling, and data mapping. This unique mixed methodology can serve as an example for researchers attempting to understand between school differences in teacher perceptions of classroom resources and demands.
