What is it about?

Both stress and ghosting seem to make people more likely to daydream excessively and feel emotionally fragile or self-focused (vulnerable narcissism). Mindfulness, which involves being present and aware, and rumination, or overthinking, explain why these effects occur in vulnerable narcissism. However, only mindfulness is important in explaining how stress and ghosting lead to maladaptive daydreaming.

Why is it important?

The finding that mindfulness may reduce the impact of stress and ghosting highlights its potential as a useful tool for mitigating issues such as maladaptive daydreaming and vulnerable narcissism. This opens up opportunities to develop psychological interventions, like mindfulness practices, to lessen the negative effects of stress and ghosting on mental health.

Perspectives

Given the growing prevalence of ghosting and its emotional toll, especially in a digital age where relationships are often fleeting, this research gives hope that mindfulness could offer a counterbalance to these stressors. The fact that mindfulness can mediate these effects encourages me to think about how it can be applied in real-world situations to build resilience and reduce overthinking or emotional fragility. Moreover, this insight pushes me to consider how mindfulness practices could be customized for individuals, depending on whether they’re more prone to vulnerable narcissism or maladaptive daydreaming. It's a reminder that emotional health interventions should be flexible, adaptable, and rooted in understanding the specific mechanisms behind our stressors.
