This paper was the first to quantify Emilio Díaz-Caneja’s 1928 report of coherence rivalry, and laid the foundation for a subsequent empirical report featured on the front cover of Vision Research that articulated a new, testable model of multistable BR (see 'Caloric vestibular stimulation reveals discrete neural mechanisms for coherence rivalry and eye rivalry: A meta-rivalry model').
