What is it about?
Our study focuses on understanding why some children in Indonesia experience neglect, a form of child abuse where their basic needs are ignored. Neglected children face complex challenges, and we wanted to find out what factors contribute to this issue. We used data from a large survey of households in Indonesia and looked at different factors related to the child and their family. Our findings show that neglected children often come from families with economic difficulties, have parents who are unemployed or less educated, and may live in challenging conditions. By identifying these factors, we hope to help create better support and interventions for these vulnerable children and their families.

Why is it important?
Our research focuses on a critical issue: child neglect in Indonesia. While child neglect is a serious concern globally, it's particularly important in Indonesia due to its impact on children's well-being and future. What sets our study apart is its consideration of both individual and household factors, recognizing that neglect is a multidimensional problem. By analyzing a large dataset, we uncover insights into why neglect occurs and highlight the crucial role of household dynamics. Our findings can inform policies and interventions aimed at preventing child neglect, which could have a significant positive impact on children's lives. As awareness grows about the importance of addressing child neglect, our research provides valuable insights for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers striving to create a safer and healthier environment for children in Indonesia.
Perspectives
I find this research particularly meaningful and impactful. Child neglect is a deeply concerning issue that affects the most vulnerable members of our society – children. This study's approach of considering both individual and household factors to understand the complex nature of neglect is commendable. It recognizes that addressing neglect requires a holistic understanding of family dynamics and socio-economic factors.
