What is it about?

This study introduces and evaluates the Barriers to Treatment Questionnaire for Latinx Caregivers (BTQ-LC), a tool designed to identify obstacles that Latinx caregivers face when seeking mental health services for their children. Through a survey of nearly 600 caregivers, the study highlights key barriers, such as difficulties navigating the mental health system, stigma, and perceptions about the necessity of treatment. It also validates the BTQ-LC as a reliable and effective instrument for assessing these challenges.

Why is it important?

Latinx families face significant barriers to mental health services, contributing to disparities in care. This study provides a practical, research-based tool to better understand these barriers, enabling targeted interventions. By addressing structural challenges and cultural perceptions, the findings can guide efforts to improve accessibility and equity in mental health care for Latinx youth.

Perspectives

This work is a critical step toward understanding the unique challenges that Latinx caregivers encounter in accessing mental health services for their children. By creating a culturally relevant tool, we hope to bridge gaps in care and foster inclusive approaches that reduce stigma and enhance access. Identifying and addressing these barriers is vital to supporting the well-being of Latinx families and ensuring their children receive the care they need.
