What is it about?

This paper examines how a new cooling system for electric vehicle batteries performs in different temperatures, from very cold (-20°C) to very hot (50°C). The cooling system uses devices called loop heat pipes to transfer heat away from the batteries without the use of any power or moving parts.

Why is it important?

We wanted to see it this system would work across a wide range of temperatures that electric vehicles might encounter in real-world use. We found that the cooling system was able to activate and function at all the temperatures tested, which is promising for its potential use in electric vehicles. Interestingly, we found that this passive cooling would slow the heating from low temperature by about 1°C, which was outweighed by the cooling benefits at high temperatures.

Perspectives

This article is an important step towards the creation of an actual prototype of this system. Often new ideas are tested in lab-condition only, whereas with this tests in enviromental chamber, we were able to understand that this system can actually work in real life condition.
